Who should say ‘I love you’ first? October 7, 2006

I was watching ‘Dil Se’ with Celine on Tuesday night when the  great unwritten law ‘  became crazily apparent to me.

  • Thou shalt not be a girl and say ‘I love you’ to a boy first.

followed by

  • Thou shalt not chase the boy when he refuses to believe he is in love too.

Now in every romance movie I have ever watched, I  can say that without exception the boy has said to the girl ‘I love you’ first.

In Kal Ho Naa Ho  its Rohit who loves Naina before she finally comes around and falls in love too, meanwhile Aman loves Naina on first glance and starts singing ‘Pretty Woman’ in the street to her.
In Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham it is Rahul who is in love with Anjali first, and she meanwhile thinks he wants to takeover her shop!
In Saathiya Adi falls for Suhani, Suhani falls in love later.
In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Rahul tells Tina he loves her before Anjali ever could say it to Rahul.
In Dil Se.. Amar tells girl (sorry don’t remember her name  ) that he loves her. She refuses he runs around after her all over the country.

Now can you just imagine this being the other way around?

How distasteful if Naina were chasing around Rohit, and the poor guy didn’t like her! yuck!
What about if Anjali were to have told an unsuspecting Rahul that she was totally and madly in love with him? (role-reversal)
What if Suhani was chasing Adi all through Mumbai and searching trains for him? Desperate.

:???:

Am I missing something here? because I agree.. a girl ‘chases’ a guy and it becomes ‘disgusting, desperate, undecent’

BUT

When the boy falls for the girl on first glance.. it is truly romantic (and yes I agree.. it is really and truly romantic. I see it happen in movies and sigh! I love it :)  )

When the boy chases the girl it is because he is madly in love and needs her. It’s not desperate, and we all sit there and watch and wish the boy will convince the girl to love him.

Which brings me to another thought…..

Is it only guys who fall in love with someone in less than 30 seconds?  and it is always true love?
Have you ever known a girl to confess to wanting to spend the rest of her life with a guy she has seen for 30 seconds? I know I certainly haven’t.  Girls may want to ‘run’ after a guy for his money after 30 seconds, but just based on looks/personality alone.. they take a lot longer to decide they like him and eventually fall in love.

Even in real life, if I hear that a girl has said ‘I love you’ to the boy before he ever said it, I instantly think ‘Oh she must be desperate’  But when they guy has said it it becomes ‘Soo sweet’
